Beg with a k row, work in st st from chart until all chart rows have been completed.
Cast off.

Following the chart, work Swiss darned/duplicate stitched stars. Press lightly on the wrong side. Cut a piece of backing fabric slightly larger than the flag. With right sides together, lay the flag onto the backing fabric and pin in place. Handstitch the flag around the two long sides and the short side without the selvedge sts. Trim away the excess fabric around the stitched edges. Turn through and press. Fold the backing fabric to the inside, along the open edge, leaving the selvedge sts free. Slipstitch the backing fabric in place along the fold. Fold the selvedge sts onto the back of the flag and slipstitch to the backing, leaving both ends open, so forming a channel for the “flag pole”. Insert the bamboo needle into the channel.
